Otaku Drive Time has an unique rating system, the Gearshift Analog Rating System. (GeARS)
The GeARS System is based on the gears of a modern sports or racing car. As such, it has six (6) gears and reverse. There are also six gears in Formula D, which is a board game you really should play.
Here’s the breakdown of what each score means in a general sense.
1st Gear: A title that is unequivocally terrible, or that the good parts are so small, they can’t improve the experience in any way. It is charitably called “a steaming pile.”
2nd Gear: This is clearly a bad title, but it’s not irredeemable. Despite the few pieces of quality, is definitely not recommended.
3rd Gear: The title does several things well, but there are too many issues to recommend. There’s definitely an audience for the title, but it’s not for everyone and it may just be worth a borrow/rent for even the intended audience.
4th Gear: The title is clearly flawed, but does enough things well to be recommended. It’s likely not for everyone and definitely not a must-buy for everyone, but it’s worth looking into.
5th Gear: This is clearly a good title with maybe a few flaws. It is unquestionably recommended by the reviewer and is definitely worth the audience’s time to enjoy.
6th Gear: There are no flaws in this title or that the flaws are so insignificant, they are irrelevant to the enjoyment of the title. This title will be an award-winner and is something everyone should buy.
Reverse-For whatever reason, good, ill, or neutral (Ha! Pun!) the reviewer(s) were unable to get through enough of the title to give a proper review.
We hope that OTDT’s GEaRS system will help you and your wallet for years to come. Just remember that your mileage may vary because all reviews are subjective. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
